When she is not running fully clothed into the foaming surf or exploring mud filled wetlands, the emerging artist Georgia Ward has her fingers in so many metaphorical creative pies it’s amazing that she can still shake hands. While currently specialising in beauty and fashion makeup, Georgia is looking at moving into body paint and SFX applications in the near future.
Although only 17, this talented young creative is already making her way through the Perth creative circles with success. For Georgia's shoot we visited the two places where her adventurous heart feels most at home. The 'Secret' Garden (Perth Creatives will know this well) and the beach. Our interview conducted on the day (and occasionally whilst covered in mud) accompanies the images below.
SO WHAT DEVELOPED YOUR INTEREST IN MAKEUP?
AFTER YEAR 10 I STARTED WORKING PART TIME AND THEN STUDYING PART TIME... I WANTED TO DO SOMETHING CREATIVE WHILE I WAITED TO TURN 18 AND GET INVOLVED WITH CAPTAIN STARLIGHT [AS A PART OF VOLUNTEERING AT PRINCESS MARGARET HOSPITAL IN THE STARLIGHT EXPRESS ROOM].
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY FOR?
JUST OVER A YEAR NOW.
AND HOW DID YOU GET STARTED WORKING FOR YOURSELF?
I DON'T REALLY DO ANY ADVERTISING [AT THE MOMENT] IT'S ALL JUST BUILT VIA WORD OF MOUTH THROUGH FRIENDS, AND FRIENDS OF FRIENDS.
WHAT STYLES DO YOU PREFER?
BEAUTY IS PROBABLY WHAT I DO THE MOST AND I ENJOY DOING BEAUTY, BUT IF AN OPPORTUNITY COMES UP TO DO SFX I WOULD TOTALLY BE UP FOR IT. [WITH BEAUTY] I PREFER NOT DO 'HEAVY LOOKS' BUT TO BRING OUT THE BEST IN EACH PERSON.
WHO INSPIRES YOU?
I'M INSPIRED BY ARTISTS SUCH AS HENDRAW (HENDRA WIDJAJA: INSTA - @HENDRAWMAKEUP )
WHAT ARE THREE SHOOTS YOU WOULD LOVE TO DO?
UMM... WELL I LOVE HIGH FASHION, LIKE A BIT OUT THERE, LIKE AVANT GARDE. BUT AT THE SAME TIME I ALSO LOVE, LIKE SUPER RAW, NATURAL BEAUTY WORK.
SO BY RAW BEAUTY YOU MEAN?
LIKE FRECKLES. REALLY MINIMALIST.
SO WHY FRECKLES? BECAUSE YOU HAVE THEM?
I DON'T KNOW, NO HAHAHAH, NOT BECAUSE I HAVE THEM, I JUST REALLY LIKE REALISTIC BEAUTY. TAKING THOSE ELEMENTS AND EMPHASIZING THEM, RATHER THAN CAKING ON LAYERS OF PRODUCT.
Shortly after the above image was taken I managed to fall literally waist deep into a muddy hole which provided many laughs and the new challenge of continuing the shoot without caking mud on the camera equipment.
SO WHAT IS YOUR BIG GOAL FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS? WHERE DO YOU WANT TO GO?
HAHAHHA LIKE EVERYWHERE! I GUESS CAPTAIN STARLIGHT IS A BIG GOAL. I STILL REALLY WANT TO GET INVOLVED... AND THIS IS THE YEAR THAT IT CAN ACTUALLY HAPPEN. I RECENTLY SENT MY APPLICATION OFF AS THEY'RE DOING AUDITIONS NOW. BUT I WANT TO TRAVEL AS WELL, I WANT TO GO EVERYWHERE.
WHAT ARE THE TOP FIVE PLACES YOU WOULD LIKE TO VISIT?
AMERICA. I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO DO THAT CAMP AMERICA THING, THAT'S SOMETHING I WOULD BE LOOKING INTO DOING. AND THEN ICELAND.... I HAVE FAMILY IN ENGLAND SO ID LOVE TO GO THERE AND DO LIKE PARIS AND ALL THAT..... ONE OF MY RELATIVES HAS AN APARTMENT IN SPAIN SO THAT WOULD BE AWESOME, SO JUST EVERYWHERE BASICALLY. I'VE NEVER EVEN BEEN OUT OF AUSTRALIA [YET].
For the second part of the shoot, once i had finished scrapping off most of the mud that i'd managed to cover myself in, we drove down to the Trigg Beach and spoke about Georgia's love of the ocean.
SO WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THE OCEAN?
I LOVE SNORKELING, I LOVE THE SAND. THE FACT THAT LIKE THE WAVES, WHEN THEY'RE BIG ARE JUST SO POWERFUL.... ITS CRAZY, YOU JUST HAVE TO LIKE TRUST THE WAVES... IT JUST CHANGES SO QUICKLY. ITS ALMOST SCARY BUT I KIND OF LIKE THAT.
Georgia also admits that part of her love of the ocean and the beach itself is the endless mystery of "whats out there" and in addition to wanting to be a marine biologist when younger, would love to be able to paint. And if she could, would paint the ocean.
With a passion for anything creative, including her keen hand at makeup, Georgia Ward is definitely a young creative talent to keep your eyes on. Her enthusiasm, drive and friendly manner combined with her love of anything artistic, are bound to take her forward in leaps and bounds.
