Fowler's Farewell

Rebecca has a very warm and friendly manner, laughing loudly, and often at both herself and the world. I was lucky enough to be able to take her portrait during our interview on World Photo-Day before she made her big move to Melbourne, where she is now based in the pursuit of both professional modelling and acting.

The day began with our interview, conducted over tea, coffee and a toasted ham, cheese, and tomato sandwich, where we were able to talk about her experiences in both the film and photographic worlds, as well as her plans for the future.

SO YOUR PRIMARY AREA OF EXPERTISE IS ACTING? SO HOW DID YOU GET INTO MODELLING?

THAT’S A GOOD QUESTION. I HAD DONE PRINT ADS BEFORE AND THEN TEAGAN JACOBS MESSAGED ME ONE DAY AND WAS JUST LIKE OH I'M DOING THIS PHOTO SHOOT AND YOUR LOOK IS REALLY GOOD WOULD YOU MIND DOING IT AND I WAS JUST LIKE “AHH OKAY” . SO THEN WHEN I WAS DOING THAT [THE SHOOT],  I MET THIS GIRL SHANNON [LARSEN] AND SHE WORKS AT CHEEP, AND I JUST SAID I REALLY LIKE YOU GUYS’ STORE SO IF YOU EVER NEED MODELS FOR YOUR INSTAGRAM I'LL DO IT.

SO THEN I JUST DID SHOOTS WITH THEM AND I GUESS BECAUSE I POSTED THOSE PICTURES ON FACEBOOK THEN PEOPLE CONTACTED ME.

SO JUST ORGANIC GROWTH REALLY?

YEAH AND JUST PEOPLE BEING LIKE “HEY WANT TO DO THIS” AND ME JUST BEING LIKE “OKAY” SORT OF THING.

OBVIOUSLY YOU’VE FOUND MODELLING FULFILLING THEN?

YEAH! I FIND IT REALLY ENJOYABLE, FUN AND I LOVE MAKING AN AWESOME PHOTO. I REALLY, REALLY LIKE DOING CREATIVE SHOOTS. I GUESS ITS JUST COOL WHEN HOWEVER MANY PEOPLE, LIKE THE STYLIST, PHOTOGRAPHER AND WHOEVER ALL PUT THEIR IDEAS INTO THIS THING AND YOU GET THIS REALLY AWESOME PHOTO.

SO YOU JUST LIKE THAT WHOLE ELEMENT OF CREATING A SHARED VISION?

YOU'RE MOVING (NOTE: Rebecca is now fully based in Melbourne) TO MELBOURNE TO PURSUE ACTING, WILL YOU CONTINUE TO DO MODELLING OVER THERE?

YES. I THINK I WILL, IF NOT JUST FOR THE SAKE OF NETWORKING AND MEETING PEOPLE.

WHAT IS YOUR LONG TERM GOAL WITHIN THE FILM INDUSTRY?

OBVIOUSLY THE DREAM IS TO BE SUCCESSFUL AND I……. FAMOUS FOR THE SAKE OF GETTING WORK. I WOULD REALLY LOVE TO JUST MAKE AWESOME FILMS.

SO YOU WOULD DEFINE ‘SUCCESS’ AS BEING ABLE TO JUST BE PART OF SOMETHING REALLY CREATIVE AND CHALLENGING? NOT NECESSARILY SOMETHING MONETARY HUGE?

MONEY IS NICE! I DO LIKE MONEY. EHHH IT'S A BIT OF BOTH I GUESS. I'D LIKE TO SAY THAT I'D NEVER BE A PART OF THOSE [BAD] FILMS, LIKE BAD NEIGHBOURS AND STUFF, BUT I GUESS ACTORS DO HAVE TO MAKE MONEY.

SO A LONG TERM GOAL WOULD BE TO BE IN A POSITION WHERE YOU ARE ABLE TO PICK AND CHOOSE YOUR OWN ROLES?

YEAH I THINK THAT IS EVERY ACTORS DREAM REALLY.

DO YOU FEEL IT IS MORE CHALLENGING TO SHOOT CLOTHED OR NUDE?

IN CLOTHING IS EASIER BECAUSE YOU CAN LIKE PLAY WITH IT [THE OUTFIT], WHEREAS IF YOU HAVE NOTHING ON YOU'RE JUST LIKE "ITS JUST ME, HAHAHA!" SO NOT FOR THE REASONS OF BEING NUDE BUT JUST FOR THE FACT THAT IT'S JUST UP TO YOU KIND OF THING. I MEAN I'VE HAD SHOOTS WHERE IVE HAD TO GO IN FREEZING COLD WATER BUT THAT DOESN'T BOTHER ME. YOU JUST KIND OF FORGET ABOUT IT ONCE YOU START DOING IT.... YOU JUST STOP THINKING ABOUT "OH IM FREEZING OR BLAH BLAH BLAH".

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE STRANGEST THING YOU'VE EVER HAD TO DO AT A SHOOT?

I'VE BEEN COVERED IN CAKE!

YOU'VE BEEN COVERED IN .... CAKE?

AHAHAHAHAH YEH! SO WE HAD LIKE A CAKE FIGHT IN THE SCENE AND SO WE DID THAT, AND IT WAS GREAT! IT WAS ALL SMOOSHED IN OUR HAIR AND SO I WAS LIKE "OH OKAY CAN I GO SHOWER?" AND THEY [THE CREW] WERE LIKE "OH YOU CAN'T GO IN THE HOUSE" BECAUSE IT WAS SOMEONE'S FAMILY HOME.

SO YOU HAD TO LEAVE THE SHOOT COVERED IN CAKE?!

I HAD TO DRIVE HOME FOR LIKE 40 MINUTES COVERED IN CAKE. AND THEN DO THE SAME THING THE NEXT NIGHT!

SO WERE YOU PAID FOR THAT?

FINALLY, IF YOU COULD WORK WITH ANYONE IN THE FILM INDUSTRY, WHO WOULD THAT BE?

[SWEARS]. THERE IS A DIRECTOR....OH! IT WOULD HAVE TO BE PETER JACKSON, JUST SO I COULD THANK HIM FOR MAKING LORD OF THE RINGS..... IT'S MY GO TO FILM.

WHEN YOU'RE FEELING SAD/ GOOD?

JUST IF I WANT TO WATCH A MOVIE. I MEAN YOU CAN WATCH THE ACTUAL MOVIE... THE BEHIND THE SCENES, WITH THE COMMENTARY, ITS STILL GOOD. AND YOU HAVE TO WATCH THE EXTENDED EDITION OF COURSE! I WATCH THE NORMAL ONES IF I'M AT SOMEONE'S HOUSE AND IM JUST LIKE " WHERE IS THE BIT...WHAT, WHAT!?" IT'S MISSING SO MUCH! I MEAN YOU GUYS DON'T UNDERSTAND! YOU'RE MISSING THE FULL DEPTH OF WHATS HAPPENING HERE.
