So by now many of you will, hopefully, have seen the trailer for my new photography workshop 'Intro to Portraiture'. If not you can watch it below right now.
'Intro to Portraiture' is designed to take amateur & beginner photographers with little-to-no knowledge of how to shoot, and through an intensive 3 hr workshop turn them into proficient and reliable shooters. Before we go any further please let me clearly state that I am not promising you that upon attending this workshop you will be able to go out and book a million photography jobs and suddenly skyrocket into fame and fortune. It is your practice and application of the knowledge and skills that will be shared, that will determine your success.
What this workshop will do for you though is provide you with a solid, professional foundation of the skills and knowledge required to; shoot in the studio, understand, operate, and get the most of your camera in most any situation, how to plan and conduct a professional photoshoots, how to communicate with your team, in order to pose models, work with stylists and get as close to your vision as possible. You will be given live demonstrations of these techniques using professional models, as well as the opportunity to participate & work with these same models in a live photoshoot.
This workshop is the distillation of everything I wish I had been taught almost a decade ago when I began shooting. Information that I have gathered and learnt over years of study, honed down to what will be the most benefit to shooters, without destroying your creative vision by bombarding you with supposedly unbreakable 'rules'.
What the video doesn't tell you is the 'why'
The reason why I've created this workshop.
I could go on and on about how it's to help people. And it is. These are the information and skills I wish I had been taught by a mentor or teacher, or even through my photomedia degree, that would have made a significant difference at the start of my career, rather than having to piece it together over the years.
But the real reason why is this;
Of seeing people accept white backgrounds gone to grey in portraits, because their shooter doesn't know how to expose correctly
Of seeing people dissatisfied with the quality of their work and not knowing how or where to improve
Of seeing unprofessional work water down the industry.
Of seeing new shooters shut out because they didn't go through 'the traditional learning process'
Of seeing the old boys club stamping down on changes to the industry because they feel threatened.
Of seeing the creativity of young artists wither and disappear because they lack the studio skills to go for the more consistent and boring 'commercial jobs'
Of seeing artists ripped off or taken advantage of because they don't understand how to communicate and justify the value of their work.
Of seeing jobs that should be paying work, turned into demands for free services because the previous 'photographer' had no grasp of the basics.
Of seeing people paying for substandard work because they don't know how to photograph something themselves.
Of seeing developing photographers lose time and money because studios don't offer guidance on how to use or set -up equipment.
Mostly I'm tired of seeing people accept a lower quality of image then what I KNOW they can deliver with a few basic improvements.
I want our industry to thrive, I want as much success for each photographer as possible, and I want to be able to give YOU the best possible start towards this as I can. I can't ensure you practice everyday, I can't be looking over your shoulder at every shoot. But I CAN teach you the core skills and provide you with the most beneficial knowledge of how to get started so that you can hone your skills and shooting in the direction you want to go.
Our first workshop will be conducted 30th September 2018, 9am - 12pm in Northcote, Victoria.
